How it works

1
Call or submit online at least five business days before you plan to dig.
Ontario One Call is free and available any time.
2
Utility owners are notified.
This includes Niagara Region for water transmission mains, sanitary trunk sewers and traffic signal conduit.
3
Underground lines are marked at your dig site using standardized colour codes before your project start date.
4
Dig safely within the marked boundaries.
You remain responsible for hand-digging near marked lines.

Legal requirement

The Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act requires that all underground services be accurately located and marked before any excavation begins (O. Reg 213/91, Section 228).

Failure to locate underground utilities before digging can result in serious injury, death and interruption of essential services, including drinking water and wastewater service for Niagara residents. Contractors and employers may face fines and liability if this requirement is not met.
