Report a problem

Report road issues on Regional roads. For problems on municipal roads — such as city or town streets — contact your local municipality.

Report a pothole

Drive according to road conditions and never assume how deep a puddle may be. While temporary fixes can be done throughout the winter, longer-term repairs wait for warmer weather in keeping with provincial maintenance standards.

Call 905-980-6000 ext. 3690 to report.

It's recommended you:

  • Stop driving your vehicle if it's not operating properly
  • Record the exact location of the pothole and report it as outlined
  • Have your vehicle inspected by a licensed mechanic
  • Contact your insurance broker — you may have coverage for this type of damage

Potholes form when extreme cold temperatures create a deep frost layer that freezes the road base.

When water seeps into cracks in the pavement it can refreeze, pressing up and lifting the pavement surface. When traffic hits the lifted pavement, it crumbles and creates a pothole.

Report a traffic light problem

Report any light failure, outage or signal timing concern. We maintain all traffic signals in Niagara. In the meantime, when there's no hydro and the signals are dark or they’re flashing red, treat the intersection as a four-way stop.

Reviews usually take approximately 10-12 weeks.

How to submit your claim

Claims should be submitted as soon as possible after the incident to ensure that a claim is not invalidated by a limitation period which can occur within 10 days of the incident.

The claim must be submitted online, or in writing by email, regular mail, registered mail, in-person or by fax to 905-687-4977.

If submitting by mail, damage claims should be addressed to:

The Regional Municipality of Niagara
Attention: Clerk's Department
1815 Sir Isaac Brock Way
P.O. Box 1042
Thorold, ON L2V 4T7

  • Your name and address
  • A phone number(s) where you can be reached
  • Your email address and fax number, if available
  • A detailed description of what happened outlining the specific damage, the name(s) of registered owner(s) of the vehicles / properties involved including the date, time and exact location of incident, witnesses' names and addresses, details of any construction in the vicinity of the loss and any other information that may assist in the review of your claim
  • A detailed description of the damages or losses you're claiming together with copies of all repair invoices, estimates, receipts (when available) or other supporting documentation
  • You must date and sign the claim

When your claim is received, it will be date stamped at the time of receipt. Your claim will then be forwarded to our risk management coordinator for review and response.

Niagara Region isn't obliged to compensate for any losses or damages for which it's not legally liable. We expect that the claimant will provide complete substantiation for the claim to the satisfaction of the Region. This approach attempts to reduce the number of unsubstantiated and frivolous claims which, in turn, reduces costs for the taxpaying public who ultimately bear the cost of these claims.

This information is intended to provide claimants with an overview of the claims submission process and should not be considered as legal advice. Claimants requiring legal advice should consult their own advisors.

Niagara Region does not accept written notices of lien claims through its online claims intake process or by email. Written notices of liens must be served on Niagara Region according to the Construction Act.
