What goes in the garbage

Garbage is for waste that can't be recycled, composted or disposed of through another program. Before putting something in the garbage, check the item disposal guide — many items have a better disposal option.

Containers sizes and rules

Garbage bags and cans must not exceed the following limits:

  • Height: 91 cm (36") or less
  • Diameter: 61 cm (24") or less
  • Weight: 22.7 kg (50 lbs) or less when full

Additional rules for garbage cans

  • Garbage must be bagged inside the can — it cannot be loose
  • Several smaller kitchen-sized bags can be placed inside a larger garbage can for set-out at the curb
  • Bags inside the can must not exceed the lip of the container
  • Cans must have handles on the outside
  • Lids must be removable
  • Metal or plastic barrels, drums and cardboard boxes are not acceptable containers

Bag limit

Residents may put out up to two bags or cans of garbage every other week. Any additional bags must have a garbage bag tag attached — one tag per extra bag. Tags are available at locations across Niagara.

If your household consistently generates more than two bags, you may qualify for an exemption. Exemptions are available for households with children under four in diapers, licensed daycares, qualifying medical conditions, group homes, and residents who are physically unable to carry their bins to the curb.

Mobius loop

Regularly filling more than two bags? Make sure you're using your Green Bin and recycling boxes every week. Most household waste can be diverted from the garbage.
