Workplace culture

Niagara Region employees have been giving back to their community through the United Way for over 30 years.

The payroll deduction program for United Way brings people and resources together to strengthen and enhance the quality of life for those in our community.

Regional staff have donated over $2 million throughout the past 30 years to support United Way.

Niagara Region is situated on treaty land. This land is steeped in the rich history of the First Nations, such as the Hatiwendaronk, the Haudenosaunee and the Anishinaabe, including the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. There are many First Nations, Métis and Inuit from across Turtle Island that live and work in Niagara today.

At Niagara Region, we welcome and value diversity in background and experience. This includes race / ethnicity, Indigenous identity, gender, sexuality, religion and ability. This also includes language, age, education, immigrant status, social status or other forms of diversity. We recognize that intersecting aspects of identity can affect one's lived experiences.

We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer. We aspire to hire and grow a workforce reflective of the diverse community we serve. By doing so, we can deliver better programs and services across Niagara.

Our People Plan

At Niagara Region, we value our more than 3,500 employees and strive to provide them with strong, inclusive and supportive environments that they can thrive in. Our employees have purpose, and their work directly impacts our residents and supports the growth of our community.

After listening to what our employees had to say, we developed our three-year People Plan to guide us to where we want to be by 2027, built around four themes that reflect what's important to our employees, leaders and organization.

Star

Top talent

Three people standing next to each other

Strong leaders

A hot beverage with steam rising from it

Flexible workplace

Two people stretching

Healthy and well employees and workplaces

We attract, select and grow strong talented employees who align with our values and enable our community-driven mission. Our focus:

  • Attract the best possible talent to our organization through inclusive and meaningful work, strong leaders and competitive offerings
  • Hire the right people for the right roles, have effective candidate pipelines, engage in succession planning for hard to fill and critical roles; ensure diversity, equity and inclusion in our hiring practices, approach and population
  • Grow our employees while in their roles and/or for their future roles
  • Provide permanent and temporary career opportunities for our employees, making selection and movement into new roles equitable, effective and efficient while maintaining operational stability
  • Retain top talent and reduce employee turnover

Leaders are at the heart of the employee experience. Employees look to their leaders to provide context for work priorities, direction on accountabilities, and partnership in their current and future job or career-related goals. Our focus:

  • Develop and grow leadership skills to prepare employees for success in their current and future role(s)
  • Recognize individual employees and teams in ways that are meaningful to them
  • Cultivate and promote inclusive work environments
  • Link work to plan, supporting employees in understanding how the work they do supports our residents, community and our organization's priorities

We recognize that our employees have different work arrangements, skill sets, accountabilities and life experiences. We are an organization of individuals. Our focus:

  • Work-life balance, where employees are able to establish and maintain a reasonable balance between the demands of their working and personal lives
  • Policies and procedures that are aligned to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion, and support flexible workplace practices in all areas of the People Plan

Health and wellness extends beyond safety on the job. While on-the-job safety is critical and will always be a priority, overall physical and mental health needs equal consideration as a key issue for our organization. Our focus:

  • Benefits that are inclusive, and support overall health and wellness
  • Supportive leadership that is inclusive and supports overall health, wellness and lifestyle, and their role in the overall health and wellness of employees in the workplace
  • Access to mental health resources that are supportive of health and wellness in the workplace, where employees understand the resources available and are comfortable accessing them
