Wastewater annual reports
Each year, Niagara Region submits performance summary reports for all wastewater systems we own and operate, as required by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.
2025 Statistics
11 wastewater treatment plants
95% pollutants removed
100% of biosolids reused
67,485 million litres of wastewater treated
109 pumping stations
151 kilometres of sewers
How wastewater services are delivered
Wastewater collection and treatment in Niagara operates under a two-tier model shared between local municipalities and Niagara Region.
Local municipalities
Own and operate local gravity sewer mains that collect wastewater from homes and businesses within their boundaries.
Niagara Region
Owns and operates large gravity sewer trunk lines, most pumping stations and forcemains, and all wastewater treatment facilities across Niagara.

How we manage biosolids
Biosolids are the nutrient-rich material left over after treating sewage at our wastewater facilities. Instead of sending them to landfill, we recycle biosolids as fertilizer on approved local farmland recovering valuable nutrients and reducing waste.
Tanker trucks transport biosolids to Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks approved farms, following strict rules about how and where it can be spread. About half of our biosolids are also dried and processed into a product used to improve soil quality.
The Garner Road Biosolids Facility on Chippawa Creek Road is Niagara Region's centralized biosolids management facility. It includes storage lagoons, storage tanks and onsite dewatering centrifuges for a total capacity of approximately 92,000 m3. The large storage tanks minimize the space needed for lagoons and help control air emissions.
Biosolids Management Master Plan
Our Biosolids Management Master Plan outlines how we manage biosolids in a way that is transparent, sustainable and environmentally responsible. To request a copy of the 2021 Biosolids Management Master Plan update, contact Sewer and Wastewater.
Benefits of recycling biosolids
Keeps biosolids out of landfill and reduces disposal costs

Reduces nutrient runoff into streams and groundwater
Provides local farmers with a cost-effective fertilizer
Supports sustainable farming practices across Niagara
